Meadow Mania

Posted on November 15, 2010 at 7:34am 1 Comment

On Saturday the Houston Arboretum had 21 volunteers come out to help us plant 470 new prairie grasses and forbs in the meadow. The rain did not dampen our spirits and we had everything planted by 11:00. Species represented were Indian grass, Big bluestem, Canadian wild rye, Switch grass, Bushmint, Partridge pea and Chili pequin. Check out the photos in the album in Multimedia. Thanks to all those who came out to help.

We had 2 volunteers show up on the 23rd and were able to get another 5 Bushmint and 70 Indian grass planted in the Arboretum meadow. We have one more Meadow Morning on the 30th. The Switch grass is in its full glory now and the Liatris are starting to bloom. Hope to see you in the meadow!

Meadow Morning number two

The same 4 volunteers came out for our second Meadow Morning and we were able to plant 13 more Bushmint and 62 Indian grass. Very exciting! There are two more Friday mornings in July so we hope to have planted a total of 300 new plants.

With the help of four volunteers and our summer intern we were able to plant 18 Bushmint and 57 Big Blue Stem at our first Meadow Morning at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. This summer the Basketflower and Eastern Gama grass have put on a show for us and the Switch grass is getting ready to do the same. Partridge Pea has been abundant and Rattlesnake Master and Liatris are coming up everywhere. Blue Waterleaf is starting to bloom and Orange Milkweed has been spotted. We have been… Continue

Meadow Mania

Thanks to 16 hearty volunteers that came out and worked in the rain for 2 hours, the Houston Arboretum now has 250 new prairie grass plants in the meadow. Big bluestem, Indian grass, Switch grass, Inland sea oats, Canada wild rye, Gulf coast Muhly, and Side oats were all represented. The rain turned the rock hard ground into something you could actually get a shovel into without too much effort so we did not mind getting a little wet. Thanks to all who came out to help and we look forward to… Continue
